Gaia GPS: A Labor of Love

by Staff Reports June 28, 2013
written by Staff Reports

We recently ran a code counting tool on our iOS source code, because we were trying to estimate how long rewriting our Android app will take. Since the numbers are mildly interesting, I thought I would share the results on the blog.

Gaia GPS and related apps end up being about 70K lines of “real” code, or 30% more if you count comments and whitespace and such. About 20,000 lines of code applies to one of five specific apps (like Gaia GPS vs. Offline Topo Maps), and about 50,000 lines of code is the core platform that all our apps share.

  • 22158 view_controllers objc=22158
  • 20470 apps objc=20470
  • 18099 controllers objc=14078,ansic=4021
  • 7562 top_dir objc=7562
  • 4353 views objc=4353
  • 4334 util objc=4334
  • 3311 data objc=3311

There are also some estimates provided by the “sloccount” tool on how long all of this took. It’s a very rough estimate, but it’s not totally off the mark from our own back-of-the-envelope calculation.

  • Development Effort Estimate, Person-Years (Person-Months) = 22.59 (271.08)
  • (Basic COCOMO model, Person-Months = 2.4 * (KSLOC**1.05))
  • Schedule Estimate, Years (Months) = 1.75 (21.01)
  • (Basic COCOMO model, Months = 2.5 * (person-months**0.38))
  • Estimated Average Number of Developers (Effort/Schedule) = 12.90
  • Total Estimated Cost to Develop = $ 3,051,635
  • (average salary = $56,286/year, overhead = 2.40).
  • SLOCCount, Copyright (C) 2001-2004 David A. Wheeler

If you are an iOS developer, you can count your code from the Terminal too:

  • brew install sloccount
  • sloccount MY_DIR

Backpacker Magazine Correction

by Staff Reports June 26, 2013
written by Staff Reports

In the June issue of Backpacker, the magazine incorrectly reported on the features in Gaia GPS for iOS. Backpacker claimed that Gaia GPS did not sync user trips between devices. This false claim was made in an infographic, which attempted to compare Backpacker GPS Trails favorably to Gaia GPS.

We wanted to post this correction on our website to get the maximum exposure. Here is the infographic, properly corrected. You can probably tell why Backpacker wouldn’t want to print it this way:

When we contacted them, Backpacker let us know they would correct this in the online version, but they did not say they would print a retraction. So unfortunately, all of Backpacker’s print subscribers will be left with false information. Here is the original, bogus graphic:

I want to end this on a personal note. Before I went into programming, I almost became a reporter, after working at my college paper as news editor, and then editor-in-chief. It makes me sad that a publication as venerable as Backpacker can’t be bothered to check facts, nor to print corrections when they are appropriate – this type of anti-journalism wouldn’t have happened even at my college rag.

I think Backpacker’s editorial missions has been corrupted by the urge to sell their own apps, and the publication is not a trustworthy source of information about apps for hiking. Buyer beware.

Interesting Recent Blog Entries by Gaia GPS Users

by Savannah May 14, 2013
written by Savannah

Two recent blog posts by Gaia GPS users caught our eyes this week.  Both posts feature cool photos from their recent hikes.

The first user from the blog “Inverted Sky: Notes from the Wilderness” explored Forsythe Canyon in Colorado, and posted great photos like this one :

Gaia GPS users Bobby and Maura are preparing for a long trek through County Kerry in Ireland in their recent blog post, “37 Miles in 3 Days”. Their hike in Minnesota included lots of slushy spring snow and gorgeous views off of converted railway bridges:

Thanks for the Gaia GPS shout outs and keep up the good blogging!

Moving to a New Blog

by Staff Reports May 8, 2013
written by Staff Reports

Welcome to the new blog or Gaia GPS. We decided to switch to a WordPress-based blog, because it became to time consuming and expensive to use our own hand-rolled bogging solution. Our old blog is still live and archived here.

Using WordPress gives us all sorts of widgets like comment functionality, social sharing, search, and other things that our previous blog lacked. It’s always sort of been a side project of mine to make the software under our blog, but I just can’t keep up with a good platform.

Gaia GPS user Johnny4Runner posted his OHV track on Everytrail, with pictures and stats from the Prosser Hills OHV area.  Looks like a beautiful area to explore, located near Lake Tahoe, California:

Gaia GPS review from BackCountryRebels.com forum

by Staff Reports November 26, 2012
written by Staff Reports

Here’s an excellent review from BackcountryRebels.com:

“Gaia GPS, by far the best GPS app IMO. Maps are free world wide, simply grab an area before you head out, it downloads to your phone, no need for cell service.

You can save an unlimited amount of tracks, show multiple tracks at once in different colors, export them and email them so you can view them in Google Earth.

I use it on EVERY ride, battery lasts all day no problem, just disable cellular data/wifi/bluetooth to increase your batt life while riding.

You can also do track back, place markers with notes, take pictures and it will use the GPS data to place them on the map, etc. Very easy to use as well. My dad had a Garmin 60csx, this app honestly works better (it’s easier to use).

Oh yeah, it’s only $10, works on IOS or Android.“

Couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

Here’s an honorable mention from a Gaia user on the HuntingPA.com forum:

“For those younger tech using, iPhone owning bear hunters, there is a great app called Gaia Gps. This app will track your movements, you can plot points, navigate to them, record pictures at specific locations, etc, etc. it’s great. Check it out of your looking for an option to help with navigation.”

iOS6 has issues with external GPS Devices

by Staff Reports November 2, 2012
written by Staff Reports

We have now had multiple reports from users that their external GPS devices (such as the Dual XGPS150 and Bad Elf) fail to connect with apps under iOS6. This includes Gaia GPS and any other GPS apps.

If you are having this issue, please see this blog post by another app developer that outlines steps to fix the bug with external GPS devices under iOS6. Our users tell us this corrects the issue for them. Quote from the blog:

  1. Go to the main iPad Settings app.
  2. Tap on “Privacy”.
  3. Tap on “Location Services”.
  4. Toggle the top row to “Off”.  This will turn off location services for all of your apps.
  5. Reboot your iPad (press-and-hold the top button for 5 seconds, slide the red slider to power off, wait 5 seconds, then press the top button to turn your iPad back on).
  6. Go back to Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services and turn location services to “On” for your iPad.  Also make sure that location services are set to “On” for ForeFlight Mobile.
  7. Leave your iPad connected the Internet for a few hours (the screen can be off).  This might not be necessary, but we have encountered a few rare cases where this fixed the problem.

Gaia GPS v7.1 is live

by Staff Reports November 2, 2012
written by Staff Reports

Gaia GPS v7.1 is now live on the App Store. The new version of Gaia includes integration with Theodolite, the ability to create URLs that will open Gaia GPS to a given location (gaiagps://map?lat=37.8354&lng=-122.0828&z=14 – tap on your iPhone/iPad to open Gaia), and various bug fixes.

In addition, we have introduced a new premium subscription called Gaia Green. The Green add-on gives you access to layered map downloads, grid overlays, datum-shifting, and premium user support – see the Gaia Green option in Settings for video descriptions of the features.

We are already working on Gaia GPS 7.2 as well, which we think will surprise and delight!
