by Ruthie Irvin September 21, 2015
written by Ruthie Irvin

You can download the new release of Gaia GPS Android (v6.03) from the Google play store, or update your device.

Most noticeably, we fixed the lagging display of waypoints/POIs when panning the map. Check out the release notes here for full details, and you can also view release notes in the app.

Send us your comments and bug reports to android@gaiagps.com. If you have any feature ideas to improve the app, submit them to the Idea Forum, and get notified about progress and community comments.

POIs and waypoints will show smoothly on the map again.

Folders and Timeline for Android has arrived

by Ruthie Irvin August 13, 2015
written by Ruthie Irvin

After years of discussion and months of work, we’re delighted to bring Folders to Gaia GPS for Android. Folders allow you to group your tracks, photos, other data in the ways that makes sense for you. We also added a new Timeline view to the app.

Folders

With the release of Gaia GPS version 6.0 for Android, you can now organize, share, import, and work with your data more easily. Find information about managing your folders on our Knowledge Base.

get organized – you can have folders like “Rocky Mountain Maps” or “Difficult Hikes” – group your data however you prefer, toggle visibility for collections, and share sets of data with others

easily access imports – Gaia automatically groups imported files into folders to keep your data together

keep less data on your phone – delete folders from your devices, and restore them on gaiagps.com when you want them again

Timeline

With the timeline, you can view all of your data on one screen, grouped by age.

by Ruthie Irvin October 27, 2014
written by Ruthie Irvin

Thanks to a new program Google initiated, beta testing for Gaia GPS Android is easier than ever.

If you are an Android user that would like to help us continue improving Gaia GPS, we would love to have you sign up as part of our beta testing team. Here is a link to our Knowledge Base article that explains the steps to join.

You will need to have downloaded Gaia GPS from the Google Play store in order to participate.

Note: Because of this new program, we no longer update the old beta testing version of the app. If you paid for the old beta test copy, email us at android@gaiagps.com and we will happily send you a copy of the new version for free.

Gaia GPS for Android v5.4 – Download Maps Along Track

by Staff Reports May 28, 2014
written by Staff Reports

We posted an update to the Android version of Gaia GPS today, which adds the ability to download maps along a track or route. This has existed for a while in the iOS app, and it’s a super-convenient way to get a map of where you are going, which doesn’t take up much space on your SD card.

Screenshot_2014-05-28-15-50-10

In addition, we did some house-cleaning based on your feedback! We fixed some lagginess that people reported when resuming the app, fixed waypoints and photos attaching to tracks, improved the UI when taking a photo, improved the Trip Computer recording UI, made the bottom stat bar remember stats, and actually a few other performance improvements and bug fixes.

Drop us a line at android@gaiagps.com with any comments. Many days, it’s your emails that are defining what we do.

Turn your Android into an outdoor GPS

by Staff Reports May 20, 2014
written by Staff Reports

Gaia GPS got written up in Greenbot today… the title makes sense to us:  “Turn your Android device into the ultimate GPS back-country navigator.”

The article makes the point that Google Maps still isn’t cutting it in the backcountry, and here I thought everyone already knew that.

“Google’s Maps Android app is better suited to urban and known-world navigation—like how to get to Starbucks—than re-enacting a Discovery Channel episode.”

Backcountry Navigator vs. Atlogis US Topo Maps Pro

by Staff Reports May 16, 2014
written by Staff Reports

Here’s a comparison of two popular Android hiking apps – Backcountry Navigator and Atlogis US Topo Maps Pro.

I previously wrote about Gaia GPS vs. BCN, and it’s clear that Atlogis is a distant third. In this case, it comes down to the maps. I could take some fun jabs at the usability and performance of these apps relative to one another, but maps make the rest moot.

I’ll also note that we’d like you to compare Gaia GPS to both apps – we’ll give you a refund if you prefer our competitors, and we’ll give you a free GaiaPro subscription if you write to tell us why you like Gaia GPS better. Email support@gaiagps.com.

BackCountry has Better Topos than Topo Maps Pro

If you are looking for USGS topo maps, then you are much better off using Backcountry Navigator than Atlogis. BCN uses the same USGS topo maps that we do in Gaia GPS – the amazingly clear and updated USGS topos provided by CalTopo. On the other hand, Atlogis seems to have stitched together their own quilt of USGS topo maps – you can tell because of the ugly watermarks they superimpose on what are actually government maps.

Screenshot_2014-05-16-11-03-32

Atlogis maps are also just obviously less clear and inferior – CalTopo renders the images to a higher resolution with a better method.

I can’t help but point out that Gaia GPS is best of all in this respect – not only do we have the clear CalTopo maps, but we let you adjust the hill-shading in the app itself, if you have a GaiaPro add-on. Personally, I prefer to have hill-shading turned off in the field. See for yourself which USGS topo is the best:

Backcountry vs. Atlogis vs. Gaia GPS

BackCountry has Better Map Selection than Atlogis

It might be that if you are looking for a weather app, Atlogis is what you want. There are a lot of weather layers, and like Gaia GPS, you can animate weather radar in the app and get some forecast info.

But for offline satellite imagery, international maps, and special sources like hunting layers and NOAA nautical charts, Atlogis isn’t going to do it for you.

Conclusion

I think people who buy Atlogis Topo Maps Pro do so for very random reasons, related to marketing and effort to promote the app. BCN is just better, and Gaia GPS is best of all.

We had another furious week of work, and we ended it by pushing a new update for Gaia GPS for Android (5.3.3). The version is available now and has several improvements related to routing and downloading maps.

  1. better controls on Downloads screen (long press items for options)
  2. tap near active route to change what route point you are guiding to
  3. improved routing UI
  4. delete saved maps fast and reliably
  5. fixed incorrect compass readings in landscape orientation (also fixed course-up arrow in landscape)
  6. other bug fixes

We also had a bunch of changes on the GaiaCloud website this week, including a topo map with public trails.

Have a great weekend!

Gaia GPS for Android, 5.3 – make routes and measure distance

by Staff Reports January 17, 2014
written by Staff Reports

The new release of Gaia GPS for Android is packed with new features, but the most important addition is probably a tool that lets you measure distance and create multipoint routes. We have been thinking about this route-maker for literally years, and we have implemented similar features in our iOS app. This rendition is how we always wanted it to be.

Screenshot_2014-01-14-19-57-20

Besides the route-maker, you’ll find new abilities to crop tracks, change track colors, and you’ll see thumbnails for your tracks in your saved list, which makes finding the one you want to look at much easier.

More to come. Let us know what you think at support@gaiagps.com

New Android Update, beta release

by Staff Reports January 14, 2014
written by Staff Reports

We just shipped a new Android beta release for Gaia GPS, which you can download here. We’ll roll these changes out to the main app later this week.

This update actually wasn’t as much work for us as some of the last few, but we think you may notice this one more than the others, regardless. It includes a route-making & distance measuring tool, which is even better than our iOS version. I’d call this the Berlin Wall in terms of unifying Gaia GPS feature parity across iOS and Android.

Screenshot_2014-01-14-19-57-20

We also added some other very visual features, like showing thumbnails for tracks in the Saved list, and the ability to change track colors by pressing those thumbnails.

thumbnails

You can probably find some differences between our iOS and Android apps now, but the two apps are essentially the same from here. The Android app shines in some respects (like map speed and route-making) that we are going to have to go back and play catch-up on iOS now, too.
