Apple Features Gaia GPS in “Your Verse – Elevating the Expedition”

by Staff Reports February 18, 2014
written by Staff Reports

I’m delighted to share that Apple’s “Your Verse” ad campaign is now featuring Gaia GPS.

You can read the story, Elevating the Expedition, in which elite mountain guides Adrian Ballinger and Emily Harrington lead their group to the top of Ama Dablam in the Himalayas, with the aid of Gaia GPS on iPad. This “verse” is foreshadowed in Apple’s TV commercial – you see Adrian and Emily trekking across the Himalayas, echoing the pictures in the web story.

I am told summiting Ama Dablam is a treacherous, technical, and death-defying feat. Our whole team feels honored to have our software carried to such great heights, and to see the name Gaia GPS rise up in the news. We want to see Gaia GPS in all of the wild places on Earth, and with the guides of Alpenglow Expeditions carrying our app, we think we’re much closer to that goal.

We’re doing a sale today on iOS – just $9.99 to celebrate the release of Elevating the Expedition.

Two Awesome Trips on GaiaCloud

by Staff Reports December 18, 2013
written by Staff Reports

I wanted to spotlight these two tracks a couple of users published to GaiaCloud today and yesterday. They both have gorgeous pictures and a cool track!

Here’s a hike near Reno showcasing a heck of a sunset.

And here’s a hike around Stinson Beach, north of San Francisco – bright red berries, beautiful trees, and a jaunt down to the sand.

trekking in Nepal with Gaia GPS for Android

by Staff Reports November 5, 2013
written by Staff Reports

Here’s a note from Gaia developer Jesse Crocker, who just left for his honeymoon in Nepal, with the new Gaia GPS for Android in tow:

Today my wife Kasi and I are leaving for our honeymoon. We spent our second summer together hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, from Mexico to Canada. After a trip like that you might guess that we are not going to spend our honeymoon riding around in a tour bus.  We will be spending the next month trekking in Nepal, first around Manaslu, then on the famed Anapurna Circuit.

In the years since hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, one thing has changed significantly in the world of long distance hiking – digital mapping. For this trek I will be exclusively using Gaia GPS for maps. For the last few years an iPhone has been my device of choice, but having recently completed a full rewrite of Gaia GPS for Android, I figured I had better use an Android. And what better way to test a new app than a month long trek on another continent, so for this trip I am leaving my iPhone 5 at home and bringing a Google Nexus 4.

The two treks combined are 300 miles of hiking, and almost 70,000 feet of climbing. Each trek goes over a 5000 meter pass.

The first step in preparing to use Gaia GPS for this trip was to find GPS tracks in gpx format for the trails we will be trekking, and I was able to find several different gpx files for both.  After downloading all of the tracks on to my phone, I loaded them into Gaia GPS, compared them to find the most accurate, and deleted the rest.  After getting the tracks loaded I shared them with GaiaCloud so friends and family could see where we are going. Check out the Manaslu Circuit and the Anapurna Circuit on Gaia Cloud.

Next it was time to download maps.  My map of choice for this trip is Open Cycle Map, a topo map based on OpenStreetMap.  Due to the  U shape of our route, I downloaded the map in several sections, to save on storage space by not downloading areas that are not directly along the trail. In Gaia GPS for iPhone, I could have used the “download maps along track” feature to get just the maps I needed, but this feature has not yet made it to Android. I also downloaded street maps for Kathmandu, and satellite maps of the entire route.  Between all three map types it was 600mb of storage on my Android.

I will be sending back tracks, pictures and stories from the trail when internet access is available.

Baby’s first hike, to Skunk Harbor

by Staff Reports July 18, 2013
written by Staff Reports

Anna and I took Adlai for his first hike this weekend. At 9 months, he’s not much of a walker yet, but he fits nicely into an Ergo baby back pack. You can have a look at our hike down the trail to Skunk Harbor on GaiaCloud.

Anna and Adlai

Anna and Adlai on the march

We haven’t been brave enough to pack the boy into the backwoods yet, because we think it will be a mess at camp. He’d probably crawl around and put everything in his mouth! Once he starts toddling a bit, though, we’ll take him on an overnighter. I didn’t camp much until I met Anna, but one of my fondest memories as a kid was a camping trip my dad and I took when I was a young boy.

The Adventure Journal’s List of 19 Awesome Hikes Under 5 Miles

by Savannah June 18, 2013
written by Savannah

The Adventure Journal compiled a list of nineteen awesome hikes that are less than five miles long.  During the summer, I find that a lot of my friends and family want to go on a hike, but do not necessarily want to or have the ability spend all day conquering a mountain.  This list is great for finding hikes that show off the scenery of a park and are accessible to hikers of all levels.  I particularly recommend their #3 pick, Tall Trees Trail, in Redwoods National Park and their #9 pick, Hidden Lake Overlook in Glacier National Park, both are excellent easy and scenic hikes.

Click on this link to check out the list and plan your next adventure.

Gaia Tags Along on the Lycian Way

by Staff Reports June 6, 2013

On the Beyond the Hedges blog, Out-of-Place-American chronicles his trip down the Lycian Way, a 510 km trek through turkey. He used Andy Allan’s OpenCycleMap within Gaia GPS to navigate, along with some not-so-accurate waypoints from a previous adventurer. This adventure features stunning coastal and forest views.

According to Wikipedia, the Lycian Way takes its name from a civilization that once rules the area.

He had to bike on some pretty rough roads, but from the pictures on his blog, it seems the trip was well worth it.

Inspiring Students from New Zealand Kayak 100km in Kayaks Made of Plastic Bottles

by Savannah June 4, 2013
written by Savannah

I was reading the great site The Adventure Blog today when I came across a post about twenty-five students from New Zealand that paddled 100 km in kayaks made of plastic bottles!  They went on this expedition to spread awareness of single use plastic and its impact on the Earth’s environment.  It’s a great cause and I for one are very impressed by the vessels they managed to make out of plastic bottles.  Check out the video below to see a preview of the documentary they plan to make of their adventure.
