Brand New Updated Android App Launches Today!

by Savannah October 30, 2013
written by Savannah

The long-anticipated update for our Android app is now available on Google Play! We’re delighted to send this update for free to all existing users. We’re also going to keep the price of the Android app at $9.99 for the time being, but in the future it will be priced the same as the iOS app ($19.99).

Earlier this year we began rewriting Gaia GPS for Android from the ground up, in house. Our core developers have been working on this release for six months, and we are very excited to show off the new app. Gaia GPS 5.0 offers all the features of the previous Android release, and much more. It is also faster, more reliable, and more usable in almost every respect. And we have much more to come before spring!

Fast and Interactive Maps

  •  • unbeatable speed and responsiveness of maps, using OpenGL hardware acceleration
  •  • display all of your tracks and waypoints on the map at once, in rainbow colors, just like Gaia for iOS
  •  • vast selection of maps for offline use, including USGS Topos and Aerial Imagery, Worldwide topo and road maps based on OpenStreetMap, and US Forest Service Maps

GaiaCloud

  •  • sync your data seamlessly across all of your devices that run Gaia GPS, from Android, to iOS, to cloud.gaiagps.com
  •  • share tracks with anyone by sending a short link via email, Facebook, Twitter, and more
  •  • keep your data backed up so you don’t lose your adventures when you lose your phone

Tracks and Waypoints, Import/Export

  •   • record and display tracks and waypoints
  •   • tap tracks and waypoints on the map to get info
  •   • see live stats and graphs about your trip, in a configurable trip computer
  •   • overlay mini-stat displays on the map
  •   • import GPX files from anywhere (email, web, Dropbox, etc.).
  •   • export GPX, KML, and CSV

More

  •  • view the map in north or heads-up mode
  •  • view progress of map downloads and other network activity
  •  • display detailed information about the status of your GPS signal
  •  • display TrailBehind places on the map, and get info and relevant webpages about remote places
  •  • search the map for places, addresses, and coordinates
  •  • use five different types of coordinates – UTM, MGRS, DDM, DMS, and Decimal
  •  • use metric/imperial and regular/nautical units

Gaia GPS 8.0 is Live

by Staff Reports October 3, 2013
written by Staff Reports

We are delighted to announce that Gaia GPS 8.0 is live on the App Store. Gaia 8 is our most ambitious release ever, and we have been working on it since the beginning of the 2013, even while pushing the 7.x releases for Gaia GPS.

Gaia GPS 8.0 on iPhone

Besides completely updating the design of the app for iOS7, we overhauled the UI on iPhone and iPad, made the maps more responsive, fixed a number bugs and quirks, and added a variety of new features. You can see the full release notes here, but I want to call out a few notable changes:

  • You can now share links to your tracks and photos in the app, using Facebook, Twitter, and other methods. Here’s a recent public track.
  • Gaia Pro, previously called Gaia Green, has been greatly expanded to include weather and tide information, as well as beautiful aerial and road maps from MapBox, and we also improved the layered map UI. Here’s a screenshot that captures the new maps, weather, and layers UI on iPad;

The track recorder is now housed in a drawer on the map on iPhone, it can be arranged to show whichever stats you want on top (double to to arrange), and we improved the UI to make it clear when you are tracking, and to let you name the tracks as you record.

Gaia 8 Track Recorder

The team is a little bigger these days too, which has really let us do more with the app. I can say it’s been a real pleasure working on Gaia 8 with these folks. Our East Coast colleague, Steve, is not pictured.

We are going to push a small update, v8.0.1, based on your feedback. Please send any comments to support@gaiagps.com.

Upload GPX files to cloud.gaiagps.com

by Staff Reports September 6, 2013
written by Staff Reports

We added a new page today where you can upload GPX files directly to GaiaCloud.

This is an interesting development for a couple of reasons. It means anyone can now use GaiaCloud… even if you don’t have an iPhone or Android, you can make a GaiaCloud account to upload and share tracks. Second, this is a convenient way to sync a GPX file to all of your devices running Gaia GPS, from any computer.

We’re going to add photo and KML uploads to the website probably next week… just GPX files for now.

Track page updates – graphs, maps, and photos

by Staff Reports August 25, 2013
written by Staff Reports

The Track pages are probably the single most important part of the GaiaCloud website. It’s a challenge to figure out what information to show, and how to show it, so that each Track page tells a story.

In the last couple of weeks, we’ve done a lot of work to improve these pages. Here is an example track page from our recent company trip to Vermillion Valley Resort.

We initially just made these pages a big map, with some tabbed information at the bottom. But now the Track pages show the stats, graphs, photos, and waypoints all together, with less emphasis on the map. Particularly when sharing a page with friends, we think this is more what people want. Also, besides the overall layout, there is now more hidden functionality, to show things like where photos fall on the map, and how the graphs interact with the tracks. You can also download the data file in convenient ways – both as standard data forms (GPX/KML), or by syncing the track into your own GaiaCloud.

We still have a long way to go, even with these pages, but we think they are starting to be very easy-to-use and functional.

New Gaia GPS Android beta – now with MBTiles and Burning Man support

by Staff Reports August 6, 2013
written by Staff Reports

We pushed a new update to the Android Gaia GPS beta today.

We have been getting tremendous feedback from the Android beta group now, so we cleaned up a bunch of bugs people have reported from the field. The version of the beta now also notably supports MBTiles, a data format MapBox published that lets people wrap up bundles of map tiles into a database. So, if you have any MBTiles, Gaia will import and show your tiles as a layer.

We’ve wanted to support MBTiles in Gaia for a while, but we did it now to scratch an itch for Burning Man.

Cloud website improvements

by Steve Goldberg August 2, 2013
written by Steve Goldberg

We pushed a few improvements to the Cloud website, focusing on the layout and UI of the gallery page. We actually have two cloud websites now – here is the gallery page for Gaia GPS, and here is the gallery page for Skipper.

This set of changes tightens up the layout of the page, and gets rid of a lot of extraneous white space. We also tweaked the colors a bit to make contrast better for reading. In general, we have a lot more we want to do with this page, but we generally like to make improvements incrementally.

I actually don’t touch the server programming much myself, and I focus on the app side, so I was interested to hear that we can deploy changes to both cloud servers with no additional overhead at all. Which is a relief since we have a third one running for a different app in beta!

Also of note, the Skipper Cloud now uses nautical charts for the main base map.

GaiaCloud update – improve Data List pages

by Staff Reports July 24, 2013
written by Staff Reports

We just pushed an update to the GaiaCloud website, which vastly improves the pages that show your lists of tracks, waypoints, and maps.

The pages are now much easier on the eyes, and easier to scan for the data you want to find, plus the sorting functionality works better. We also improved the speed of this and other pages on the site.

Coming up probably this week, we’ll show thumbnails for tracks in the List and Gallery pages, and we have a new layout in the works for the Track pages.

GaiaCloud – Gallery page and sharing improvements

by Staff Reports July 23, 2013
written by Staff Reports

Constant work continues on the GaiaCloud website. Today, we made the Public Gallery of tracks much faster to load.

The sharing functions on the Track pages have also been moved up to the top of those pages, and we streamlined sharing to make it easier. You can see the sharing buttons on one of my track pages, a trail to a beach in Tahoe.

Now that we have the basics in place, we are working on making the Track, Gallery, and Data List pages much better, since those are the ones people use the most.

Public gallery for GaiaCloud

by Staff Reports July 19, 2013
written by Staff Reports

Today we pushed a first look at the Gallery page for GaiaCloud. Herein you can see tracks other Gaia GPS users have made public. There are a lot of beautiful trips recorded, complete with photos, graphs, and maps.

You can make your tracks show up in the Gallery too. Visit http://cloud.gaiagps.com, and there is an option on your Track pages. Tap the “Share” tab on any track page, and flip the switch to “Public.” Pretty soon, we’ll add the sharing option directly to the app, too.

The GaiaCloud website development continues in earnest. Next week, we’re going to focus on improving and beautifying the Track and Gallery pages. We also plan to add an option to upload files to the website, to make it easier to import data into Gaia GPS, or share tracks from other apps.

New Map Sources Added to GaiaCloud Site

by Savannah July 1, 2013
written by Savannah

Anting, our new summer intern, has been very busy lately sprucing up the GaiaCloud website.  Anting added new map layers to the GaiaCloud preview screen so you can now view your tracks and waypoints on Mapbox OpenStreetMap, Mapbox Satellite, OpenCycleMap, and USGS Topo maps!

GaiaCloud’s log out was also a bit unreliable before, and now it works perfectly. Thanks Anting!  There will be more improvements rolling out soon, so keep a watch out and let us know what you think of the GaiaCloud website.
