Anting, our new summer intern, has been very busy lately sprucing up the GaiaCloud website. Anting added new map layers to the GaiaCloud preview screen so you can now view your tracks and waypoints on Mapbox OpenStreetMap, Mapbox Satellite, OpenCycleMap, and USGS Topo maps!
GaiaCloud’s log out was also a bit unreliable before, and now it works perfectly. Thanks Anting! There will be more improvements rolling out soon, so keep a watch out and let us know what you think of the GaiaCloud website.
We’ve just added a new OSM map source from MapBox, which uses up-to-date OpenStreetMap data displayed with a custom, elegant design from MapBox. This OSM source will typically update data within ten minutes of OSM data updates! You can read more about this source here: http://www.mapbox.com/blog/announcing-mapbox-streets/
MapBox OSM is only available to Gaia Green subscribers due to the monthly fees we incur from adding it to Gaia GPS. If you’re a Gaia Green subscriber and you’d like to add the source now, send us an email at support@gaiagps.com and we’ll get it set up for you. When we release version 8.0, we’ll include it on the main list of sources in Gaia GPS.

Great news Gaia users! We’ve added another map source today from the USGS. It’s their new National Map source. Check it out by going to the layer button on the main map screen and then tapping on “Add more layers”. You’ll find it under the US Topo category labeled as the “USGS National Map”. Let us know what you think of this new USGS source and have fun exploring this weekend.

When we heard the news that Andy Allan, the maker of OpenCycleMap was making a new hiking layer, we were very excited to say the least. All of us at Gaia GPS use OpenCycleMap thanks to its clear trail markings and great design. You can now add this layer by going to the layer button on the main map screen and then tapping on “Add more layers”. You’ll find it under the International heading by the name OpenHikingMap. We are now offering MapBox Aerial source to Gaia Green subscribers. At this time, we don’t plan to include it in the base app, because the pricing is a bit steep for our level of usage.
If you are a beta tester or Gaia Green subscriber, you can send an email to support@gaiagps.com, and we’ll send you a link to add the source to Gaia. In v7.4 of the app, there will be an option to add it directly, without contacting support.
The MapBox aerials are really cool, because they “average” pixels from multiple images, to remove clouds, snow, and other not-so-relevant seasonal data. The coverage is global, with higher resolution imagery in the US.
