Introducing Hike Search: Easily Discover and Save Hikes Anywhere in the World

by Angela Crampton December 20, 2018
written by Angela Crampton

We’re thrilled to announce the release of a new, searchable, worldwide database of hiking routes across the Gaia GPS apps and website. The feature, called Hike Search, allows you to search through a continuously growing list of parks, forests, and trails to find the detailed information and maps of the best routes near you.

https://blog.gaiagps.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/TEmplate_2.mp4

You may have already seen Hike Search in action if you’ve visited gaiagps.com recently, but now you can use it on the go by updating to the latest version of the Gaia GPS app.

Gaia GPS has always been a comprehensive tool for helping users find their way in the backcountry. With the release of Hike search, it’s now a tool for hike discovery, as well.

Download a Trail and Maps with One Tap

Tap the new Discover tab at the bottom of your screen to get started.

In the search bar, start typing the name of a place you want to explore. That can be a trail, national or state park, or nearby city. Filter your search by a hike’s ranking, time commitment, stars, difficulty, and length.

A Living, Breathing Catalog of Trails

The most exciting thing about Hike Search is that it’s a constantly evolving, living, breathing thing. All the hikes populating the database are sourced from Gaia GPS community data, and the more hikes Gaia GPS users record, the more known routes Hike Search will generate.

Gaia GPS Hike Search aggregates public tracks and information from the community and analyzes redundancies to determine which sections of trail are known to the outdoor community as hikes. As more people publish tracks and photos, Hike Search generates more known hikes, improving its own data and internal rankings for everything on the map.

Get Involved, Give Back to the Hiking Community

Anyone can edit pages for Parks, Cities, or Hikes—this means that crucial information is sourced directly from locals, or people who’ve experienced a hike or area firsthand. As more people add their edits and trips reports, we figure Hike Search will become the most accurate and up-to-date trail database in the world—a Wikipedia for hikes.

Read here for more information on how you can get involved.

You can also contribute to the project by marking your tracks to public to see your adventures influence the course of this new resource, or leave a Trip Report for hikes you’ve done.

We welcome your feedback. Send a note to support@gaiagps.com with any questions, or just to let us know what you think.

Gaia GPS for Android version 6.5.12

by Ruthie Irvin August 12, 2016
written by Ruthie Irvin

Gaia GPS for Android update 6.5.12 adds the ability to import custom map sources directly into the app as an alternative to using the addmapsource page on gaiagps.com.

Create a TileJSON using a TMS map source by following the instructions in this Help Center article. Test out your TMS URL here: http://trailbehind.github.io/TilejsonTester/.

After creating the TileJSON file, Android users can save it to the internal storage or SD card. Navigate the filesystem from within Gaia GPS to import the file, then find the custom map source in the Layers menu when the import completes. Follow the instructions here for importing via the SD card.

—find the custom map source in the Layers menu after import

—find the custom map source in the Layers menu after import

You can also import TileJSON files in the iOS app, or import the TMS source directly to your account on gaiagps.com, then sync back to the app.

Read more about this release and others on the Gaia GPS updates page.

Several Big Improvements to GaiaGPS.com: Better Search, Easier to Use, Track Graphs Fixed, Map Layers

by Josh Straub January 12, 2015
written by Josh Straub

Our team recently completed some great changes to the GaiaGPS.com website that we think you’ll really enjoy:

1. See All Your Travels On One Big Map: Now when you log in to your GaiaGPS.com account and select the main map, you can toggle displaying all your personal Tracks and Waypoints in addition to public trips.

gaiagps personal map with layers1a
2. Your Last Used Base Map Now Remains Selected:
Do you prefer to start with satellite imagery instead of a topo map? Now you don’t need to re-select it every time you log in.

3. Better Map Search: Results will now autocomplete suggestions as you type.

4. Improved Track Stats Speed/Altitude Graph: Distance over time is now displayed, and the graphs look much nicer. Track lines no longer spill past the right edge of the graph.

5. Publish Your Track or Waypoint With One Click: A new “Public” column has been added to the table listing all your Tracks, Waypoints, and Routes. Simply click Yes/No to toggle and make your file Public.

6. Change Map Layers Anywhere You See a Map: No longer will you need to go into the full-screen map just to change layers from topo to satellite. Now every map has a Layers button.

7. GaiaPro Map Layers Now Also On the Website: Users subscribing to our GaiaPro service are familiar with the Map Layers menu in the app which allows you to display several layers at once with adjustable transparency for each. This functionality has now been added to the GaiaGPS.com website. Activate layers by dragging them to the top of the list.

8. Your Custom Map Sources Now Available On the Website: For our users who use custom tile servers in the app, those should now be available on the website too.

Gaia GPS for Android – Open Beta

by Staff Reports July 18, 2013
written by Staff Reports

Today, we’re very happy to announce the Open Beta release of Gaia GPS for Android. You can download it from Google Play now.

Going forward, Google Play will have two versions of Gaia GPS – Beta and normal. Anyone who wants to can participate in beta testing, and the normal version will always get updates when they are finished and fully polished. We plan to update the current “normal” version of Gaia GPS to the new code towards the end of the summer. Most users will probably just want the production version of Gaia, but if you’re eager to check out our new cutting edge stuff, you can get the beta, and help us iron out the bugs.

This release is almost a total rewrite of Gaia – the maps are fast and smooth, and the UI has been overhauled on both phones and tablets. By the time this new app leaves beta, it will be extremely similar to the iOS app.

In the past, we have done all beta testing through private distribution. We are releasing a beta version on the Market because:

  • it’s much easier to manage adding new testers
  • we think we’ll get an order of magnitude more eyeballs on it
  • we noticed larger apps like Chrome do it this way
  • we’re eager to get the new release out, but can’t overwrite the old one until it’s fully cooked

Any feedback is much appreciated!

Gaia GPS for Android – 3.0

by Staff Reports August 4, 2011
written by Staff Reports

We launched Gaia GPS for Android last summer, and with the release of v3.0 today, I must say – I think the app has arrived.

I wish I could claim more of a role in building the Android app, but it’s our friend Abhishek who leads Android development, and he works tirelessly and relentlessly. More and more, I see Gaia on Android surpass Gaia on iPhone, which is really quite motivating for us on the iOS side of things 🙂

Offline Topo Maps For Sale on App Store

by Staff Reports June 14, 2010
written by Staff Reports

If you don’t like to take tracks with your iPhone, but you are interested in maps and backcountry nav tools, then Offline Topo Maps is the app for you. In Offline Topo Maps, we stripped Gaia GPS down to the bare essential and redid the app to have a full-screen map display. On either iPad or iPhone, Offline Topo Maps makes for a fast, immersive mapping experience.

  • Interested parties can check out the iTunes listing for Offline Topo Maps
  • You can also view the Offline Topo Maps manual to get a feel for the app.

Another good thing about Offline Topo Maps is that we took the time to polish the feature set, and we improved some things we have been meaning to for Gaia GPS. For example, in Offline Topo Maps, we made sure the map arrow doesn’t get clipped when it rotates. We never seem to fix “minor” defects like these because we are always busy with other things in Gaia, but for Offline Topo Maps, we were more interested in “works really well” than “has lot of features.” That said, all of these minor improvements also appear in the next version of Gaia GPS, so Gaia is going to be pretty awesome when v3.2 is approved too!

A Flashlight! On Sale Now

by Staff Reports November 4, 2009
written by Staff Reports

I am conducting a little iPhone app experiment – I decided to make a flashlight app and join the hordes of other developers that have one. I know it won’t make any real money, but I’m just curious to see if anyone buys it.

If you would like to donate .99 to my little experiment, or even if you need a flashlight, here’s the link to buy A Flashlight! on iTunes.

Even though it is just a flashlight, I do have a unique feature among flashlights, two actually. The first is you can use a color wheel to select your color of light. The other is you can strobe the light at a continuous range of speeds. Take that other Flashlight apps!

What’s New in V1.2

by Staff Reports October 17, 2009
written by Staff Reports

Anna, Tim, and I are pretty excited about the 1.2 version of Gaia GPS. This release really tightens up the code, particularly on 3G phones, and includes a bunch of user-requested features. As a small company, we have very limited resources when it comes to testing pre-release, but now that Gaia GPS is out in the wild, we’re really been able to hone the feature-set and stability of the app to meet the needs of our users.

We now have a really active group of beta testers who are giving us constant feedback and using the app for everything from hiking and trail running, to hunting and horse-back riding. This version is in review by Apple now, and we are hoping it comes out some time next week. Here’s what’s new in 1.2:

New Features

  • pause/resume, last track remembered at start-up, resume any old track
  • guide to waypoint
  • use Decimal, DMS, and UTM coordinates
  • type in coordinates to make map bookmarks manually, in any format
  • OpenCycle maps
  • help button for first screen
  • full-screen map button
  • “me-marker” is now an arrow that shows your bearing (or heading on 3GS phones)
  • app continues recording while locked

Improvements and Bug Fixes

  • more settings are remembered (lock contrast, waypoints, labels)
  • export full-resolution photos, and photos are now truly geo-tagged
  • much faster and more stable on 3G phones
  • fixed various UI inconsistencies reported by users
  • sounds no longer turn off iPod

How to Avoid the Installation Bug in Gaia GPS v1.1

by Staff Reports October 2, 2009
written by Staff Reports

If you are a user of Gaia GPS, please read the following before updating to v1.1, which came out on October 1, 2009.

Before updating to v1.1, you should delete any Waypoints you have saved. If you have a Waypoint saved at the time of the update, the app will crash on start-up until you reinstall. Tracks, photos, and maps are not a problem, and after the update, you can save Waypoints again.

To delete all of your Waypoints:

  1. Click the 4th Menu button on bottom.
  2. Click the Wrench.
  3. Click “Clear All Waypoints.”

If you have already upgraded, then you will need to delete and reinstall the app.

We apologize if you have lost any data. We have now created a specific test that will prevent bugs like these in future releases.
