Customize Your Maps with New Emoji Waypoints

New emoji waypoints are here! Now you can mark your favorite spots on the map with a ❤️, flag that campsite where you saw a 🐻, and add a💧 at every crucial water source along your route. Customize your waypoints in Gaia GPS using the hundreds of emoji symbols available on your phone, tablet, or computer.

It’s always been possible to customize the name and symbols of your waypoints in Gaia GPS. Now the new emoji waypoints give you almost endless possibilities to mark important places on the map. Whether you’re backpacking across the 🏜, hunting 🦌 on public land, camping 🏕 near a river, or skiing ⛷ and biking 🚲 through the mountains, emoji waypoints give you more options to add custom information to your maps.

Use Emoji Symbols to Add Custom Waypoints

Have you ever worked hard to get up to the top of a ridge and have been overcome by the view? Add a 😃 waypoint to the map to remember the joy you felt when you reached the summit. Use the 📷 emoji icon for waypoints in places with great views or to remember where you snapped photos on a trip. Flag weather conditions on the map to document which days you experienced ☔️ or ☀️ on your trip. Use emoji waypoints to mark hazards such as lightning, wind storms, and mountain snow.

How to Get Emoji Waypoints

Emoji waypoints are available to everyone on iOS, Android, and the web at www.gaiagps.com. Use emojis to customize waypoints on any map in Gaia GPS. Learn more about adding waypoints to the map in this step-by-step article from the Gaia GPS help center.

Customizing a waypoint with an emoji icon is easy. After adding a waypoint to the map, you can customize its appearance by selecting “Choose icon.” Tap the smiley face emoji in the icon menu to access your device’s emoji library. Search for and tap on the perfect emoji to customize the waypoint. Press “Save” after you’ve added the emoji icon.

You’ll need a Gaia GPS Premium Membership to download your custom waypoints and take them with you offline in places without cell service.

Discover the Best Trails and Find Public Lands with Gaia Topo Updates

Discover new trails and routes and find campsites off the beaten path with two new updates on Gaia Topo. The first update lets you plan ahead at home and save known hikes and other routes for the field on gaiagps.com. Additionally, now you can find national forests, state parks, national parks, and any other public lands quickly with new color-coded public land shading.

Each new improvement on Gaia Topo makes this map a better one-stop shop for all of your planning and traveling needs.

Find Routes Near Your Campsite or Any Point of Interest on gaiagps.com

New nearby route suggestions make it easy to find hikes, offroading routes, bike trails, or other public tracks close to the places you want to visit. While you plan on gaiagps.com, select a trail, campsite, or any natural feature to see a quick list of nearby routes.

How to Use Nearby Route Suggestions

Start by selecting a trailhead, campsite, viewpoint or natural feature, to see nearby routes. A list of routes will appear, including the distance and difficulty rating of each route so you can quickly assess which ones fit your needs. The list includes routes within 500 meters of the selected point of interest and 1000 meters of selected trails. While you browse the list of routes, hover over them to see the tracks appear on the map.

Once you find a route you’d like to explore, you can either select the route name to view even more details or quickly save it by clicking the green “plus” button. If you want to save multiple routes, click the “plus” buttons for all your favorites. Unsave any route by clicking the red “-” button. Find all of your saved routes in the saved folder on your iOS or Android device.

Nearby route suggestions are now available on gaiagps.com. To access your saved routes open the Gaia GPS app on your iOS or Android device, and visit the saved folder. Download any saved route to your device for the field with a Premium membership.

Identify Public Lands With New Map Shading

New color-coded public land ownership on Gaia Topo helps you discover areas to hike, camp, and explore. Now you can identify all of America’s public lands by designated colors on the map. Use this new feature to seek out campsites on BLM land (yellow) or National Forest land (light green), view nearby state parks (red), or safely travel through any public land across the United States.

Color designations appear for National Forests, National Parks/Recreation Areas, State Parks, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Wildlife Areas, Marine Protection Areas, Wilderness/Wilderness Study Areas and Other Parks/Protected areas. You can find each designation under the Gaia Topo map legend by clicking the layer on gaiagps.com or tapping the “i” icon on the lower righthand corner of your map on iOS and Android.

Find Your Saved Items on the Map with a New Sidebar

A new tool on gaiagps.com allows you to jump to any of your saved items on the map. Similar to the Gaia GPS mobile apps, all of your saved tracks, routes, waypoints, and areas now live in an organized sidebar. Additionally, you can now hide any saved item on your map and find it in the sidebar as well.

Search, Filter, and Sort Saved Items

Now you can skip zooming and scrolling across the map to find a route or waypoint. Click the “folder” icon located along the left edge of the screen, find your item in the sidebar, and click to jump right to the item’s location. There are a few ways you can find your item by using the search, filter, and sort tools.

The search bar allows you to type in keywords to pull up a saved item instantly.

If you’d rather browse a list of saved items, use the filter and sort tools.

The filter tool allows you to control what items are shown in the sidebar by type (route, track, waypoint, or area) and visibility (shown or hidden on the map). Only want to see your tracks in the sidebar? Simply hide all other items by unchecking their boxes in the dropdown list.

Change the order of your items using the sort tool. This allows you to reorder your list of saved items based on time created, time updated, or title in either ascending or descending order.

Hide Waypoints, Tracks, and Routes on the Map

With the new saved items folder, you can also hide items on the map for cleaner map viewing. Preparing for an upcoming trip, printing a map, or have a plethora of waypoints dotting your screen? Use this to declutter your map or organize your data however you like.

To hide an item, first select it on the map and click the “more” button, and click “hide item”. Then, use the filter tool to show all of your “Hidden” items in the saved items sidebar or search for a specific hidden item by name.

You can also control item visibility from the sidebar using the eye icon. Hover over an item in the saved items sidebar and click the eye icon to toggle visibility.

Access the Saved Items Sidebar

Access the Saved Items sidebar by visiting the main map on gaiagps.com and selecting the “folder” icon on the left side of the screen. From here you can use all of the features mentioned in this article to search, filter, sort and hide your saved items.

Measure Areas on the Web

Measuring land just got easier with Gaia GPS’s area/polygon measurement tool now available on gaiagps.com. Start using your desktop computer for your land measurement needs.

Often used by land managers, search and rescue groups, and private property owners, this tool allows you to create a polygon to cover irregular land boundaries and measure the perimeter and acreage or km² for a piece of land.

Click the area icon on the left-hand side of the map to get started.

Creating an area on gaiagps.com allows you to adjust each edge and side of the polygon so you can conform the shape to cover land features. Drag and drop the corners to new locations. Add an adjustable point by clicking the distance markers between each point.

Saved areas will appear as shaded polygons on the map. Select the shaded area on the map to change the name and color. Or make an adjustment by clicking ‘More’ and ‘Edit Area.’

Use Coordinates to Save Waypoints on gaiagps.com

Search and save coordinates as waypoints on gaiagps.com. If you need to paste in coordinates from another website or type in coordinates from one of your paper maps, gaiagps.com now has you covered.

This feature is useful for all sorts of Gaia GPS users, from casual hikers to search & rescue personnel.

Now, if you paste or type in coordinates in the search box, that will both center the map, and let you save the location as a waypoint if you wish. Coordinates are recognized in many formats allowing you to easily plug in your desired locations.

The mobile app (for iOS/Android) has always allowed you to both tap the map and manually enter coordinates, and now you can do the same on the website.

Here’s an example of how to save a waypoint using UTM coordinates.

Using coordinates to make waypoints was one of the most requested features on our forums. After launching an improved version of the main map, building this feature was the next update we wanted to make. Thank you for helping us improve Gaia GPS with your feedback.

How to Edit Waypoints on gaiagps.com

You can now reposition your existing waypoints on gaiagps.com. Easily edit the waypoint name, too — choose from an automatically generated list of names, or give it a custom one.

From the waypoint details page, click “edit waypoint”
Click and drag to reposition the point
Edit the waypoint name in the left hand menu, or click the dropdown for a list of choices
Select ‘save’ to finish editing

After editing the waypoint, open Gaia GPS on your iPhone or Android and changes will automatically sync over. If you don’t have automatic sync enabled, you can trigger the sync or enable automatic syncing from the Settings menu.

How to Embed Gaia Maps and Data on Your Website

You can now embed a map view on your own blog or website to display a track, route, folder, or other data you create in Gaia GPS.

How to Embed Gaia GPS in Your Website

1. Log into your Gaia GPS web account.

Go to gaiagps.com and log into your account.

2. Find the track you want to embed.

In righthand corner, hover cursor over profile picture. Click “Tracks.”

On “My Tracks” page, make sure the track is Public. Click the track you want to share on your website.

3. Embed your track.

Share the track by clicking on the embed button to get the code to paste onto your website or blog.

Copy and paste the embed code onto your website or blog.

4. Track preview

The view shows the Gaia GPS Topo map source with data overlaid, and it includes statistics and a link back to the source data.

Embedding could potentially include many customization options, or different layouts that show larger maps, or perhaps photos.
