Folders and Timeline for Android has arrived

by Ruthie Irvin August 13, 2015
written by Ruthie Irvin

After years of discussion and months of work, we’re delighted to bring Folders to Gaia GPS for Android. Folders allow you to group your tracks, photos, other data in the ways that makes sense for you. We also added a new Timeline view to the app.

Folders

With the release of Gaia GPS version 6.0 for Android, you can now organize, share, import, and work with your data more easily. Find information about managing your folders on our Knowledge Base.

get organized – you can have folders like “Rocky Mountain Maps” or “Difficult Hikes” – group your data however you prefer, toggle visibility for collections, and share sets of data with others

easily access imports – Gaia automatically groups imported files into folders to keep your data together

keep less data on your phone – delete folders from your devices, and restore them on gaiagps.com when you want them again

Timeline

With the timeline, you can view all of your data on one screen, grouped by age.

Be a Beta Tester at Gaia GPS

by Ruthie Irvin February 17, 2015
written by Ruthie Irvin

No one is better at testing an app than the people that use it, which is why we are continually looking to expand our beta testing teams for both iOS and Android.

Recently, Apple changed the TestFlight beta testing program so that apps could recruit up to 1,000 testers. They also made it easier to add people to our beta testing team by only requiring a user’s Apple ID, rather than a UDID.

A few months ago we also posted about how to be a beta tester for Gaia GPS Android, and are still looking to add new testers under that platform, as well.

If you are interested in beta testing Gaia GPS on your iOS device, please send an email to support@gaiagps.com letting us know, and don’t forget to include your Apple ID email address.

Four Gaia Babies Last Year

by Ruthie Irvin January 6, 2015
written by Ruthie Irvin

In 2014, the Gaia GPS team changed quite a bit. More people joined the company last year than were previously on the team! Co-founders Anna and Andrew, and software engineer Jesse, welcomed an additional software engineer, Josh B., and a whole new support staff, Josh S., Dave, and me, Ruthie.

As exciting as it is that our staff and user-base are growing, we’re most excited to share that in addition to the employee increase, Gaia GPS experienced a population increase as well: Four Gaia Babies!

Anna and Andrew welcomed their second child, Calliope, in April. Then, for three months at the end of the year, we had a cascade of new babies. Jesse’s first child, Elkin, joined the world in September, Josh B. became a father for the second time to Elaine in October, and I had Hazel, my first baby, Calliope’s 10th cousin, in November.

In the order they were introduced, here are our Four Gaia Babies:

We hope they love the woods as much as we do!

iOS update for 3 apps – No more background battery drain

by Ruthie Irvin November 11, 2014
written by Ruthie Irvin

We had a few kinks to work out in our iOS apps, Gaia GPS, Offline Topo Maps (OTM), and Skipper, since the update to iOS 8 took place. The primary concern addressed across all 3 apps since Apple’s release of the new operating system was the high battery usage due to the GPS sometimes not being disabled while the app was backgrounded.

The newest version of Gaia GPS, 9.1.4, fixed the broken Facebook login that was causing a lot of users’ syncs to gaiagps.com to fail. We also cleared up Skipper’s continual chart download issue, and made it possible to deselect unwanted charts again.

To see a full list of the changes made to each app in their respective updates, or to complete the update, check out the App Store from your device or visit the the iTunes page for:

– Gaia GPS 9.1.4

– Offline Topo Maps 5.0.3

– Skipper 2.0.3

If you have ideas or suggestions for us, please visit our Idea Forums. There you can submit ideas and vote/comment on existing ones. This feedback helps us make decisions for future releases, so your input counts!

– Visit the Gaia GPS & Offline Topo Maps Idea Forum

– Visit the Skipper Idea Forum

If you are experiencing issues with our apps:

1. Check our Knowledge Base for detailed explanations on many features, including step-by-step screenshots. (Vast improvements to the Skipper Knowledge Base coming soon.)

2. If you don’t find your answer in the Knowledge Base, please contact support. For the fastest service, please include details like device type, operating system and Gaia GPS version information, along with a description of the issue you are experiencing.

GaiaGPS.com Delete Sync

by Ruthie Irvin November 3, 2014
written by Ruthie Irvin

There was an issue with the website causing the deletion of data to not sync back to devices, but we are happy to report that it has been resolved.

Now, if you delete individual waypoints, tracks, routes, or maps, or if you mass-select and delete your data, it will no longer appear on your device once synced.

You can also toggle your data not to sync to your device rather than deleting it completely.

Check out our Knowledge Base article about using GaiaGPS.com to learn how to delete and toggle not to sync from your browser.

New Beta Testing Program for Gaia GPS Android

by Ruthie Irvin October 27, 2014
written by Ruthie Irvin

Thanks to a new program Google initiated, beta testing for Gaia GPS Android is easier than ever.

If you are an Android user that would like to help us continue improving Gaia GPS, we would love to have you sign up as part of our beta testing team. Here is a link to our Knowledge Base article that explains the steps to join.

You will need to have downloaded Gaia GPS from the Google Play store in order to participate.

Note: Because of this new program, we no longer update the old beta testing version of the app. If you paid for the old beta test copy, email us at android@gaiagps.com and we will happily send you a copy of the new version for free.

Big Improvements in Gaia GPS Android Knowledge Base

by Ruthie Irvin October 13, 2014
written by Ruthie Irvin

Gaia GPS Android users, you’re in for a treat! Since beefing up our communications team, we’ve burned the midnight oil updating existing articles, and preparing new ones, for our Gaia GPS Android Knowledge Base.

We now have current articles explaining key features like “How to Download a Map,” “How to Delete a Track,” and “How to Force a Sync with GaiaGPS.com”—as well as many others.

You’ll find that these articles are neatly categorized in the Knowledge Base for easy searchability, and we will continue to add more over time. Our goal is to make using Gaia GPS as easy as possible by providing the information you need to get the most out of the app.

If you search the Knowledge Base for instructions on any feature and don’t find the answer you are looking for, please send us a note at android@gaiagps.com and we will add your article suggestion to our list of topics to cover.
